Sales Tax

These days it’s all about sales tax.  Senator Durbin hasn’t introduced his Main Street Fairness Act, the bill that would allow states to tax online retailers, but he is expected to do so soon.  In the mean time, several states have introduced legislation to create their own versions of the affiliate tax law first adopted in New York in 2008. Currently four states have such a law, New York, Rhode Island, North Carolina, and Illinois.  Arizona and California are in line to become the fifth and sixth states.  Meanwhile, South Carolina has passed a resolution granting tax breaks to Amazon.

The sales tax debate is continuing to heat up.  For more information on sales tax, use tax or other tax related legal concerns, contact Horowitz & Weinstein.
